The classes of the Master Water Technology take place at Wetsus, the European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology. Located at the WaterCampus Leeuwarden, Wetsus brings together researchers, universities, companies and public organisations to collaborate on innovative solutions for global water challenges. Together they work in various research themes to turn scientific discoveries into practical applications. With an international community from across the globe, Wetsus has become an important place for knowledge exchange, innovation and talent development within the water sector.
This close connection between education and research gives students direct access to an international network of scientists and experts in the water sector. The students are surrounded by ongoing research projects, presentations, and water congresses like the Wetsus Congress or the European Water Technology Week. This ensures that the programme remains strongly connected to the real world applications and latest development in the water technology sector.
One floor of the Wetsus building is completely dedicated to the research. The floor plan consists of almost 500 m2 laboratory space, divided in analytical, biological, chemical and synthesis laboratories. All analyses in the analytical lab are being performed by a team of chemical and research analysts that can support PhD’s in their research.During the programme, students gain hands-on experience through the Practicals in these laboratories
Students also have the opportunity to carry out their thesis research at Wetsus within one of the active research themes. This allows students to work alongside PhD researchers, scientists and industry partners in ongoing research.

Beyond research, Wetsus offers an open and welcoming international community. The organisation has a low-barrier, collaborative atmosphere where students, researchers and staff easily connect with each other. Every Thursday, lunch presentations are organised where PhD researchers share updates on their work. And every second Thursday, the Wetsus community comes together for the traditional “Borrel”: an informal after-work gathering with drinks, snacks and games.
There are also several committees, sports teams and social clubs that students can join, including football, volleyball, basketball and the Wetsus band. The building itself encourages interaction, with shared spaces, free coffee, tea and soup in the canteen, as well as ping-pong and foosball tables. In addition, events such as the annual Student PV trip bring together students and interns for a day of fun activities.
